Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Sub-Level

The heavy thud reverberated up through the floorboards of the nursery, breaking the tender silence of the family reunion. Julian gently set Leo back against the pillows, the raw vulnerability in his eyes instantly hardening back into the protective instincts of a cornered wolf.

“Stay here with him,” Julian whispered to Elena, his hand sliding toward the Walther pistol resting in his coat holster.

“No,” Elena said firmly, standing up and smoothing down her beige pantsuit. “Whatever is down in that archive is connected to Victoria’s backup server. If she had an accomplice on the inside whom Marcus and Sterling didn't name, they’re wiping the physical hard drives right now.”

Julian studied her face for a fraction of a second, recognizing that arguing with her was entirely futile. He gave a sharp nod. “Stay behind me at all times.”

They crept out of the nursery and moved down the grand marble hallway, bypassing the silent crystal chandeliers to reach the hidden service stairwell tucked behind the mahogany linen closet. The metal steps spiraled downward into the subterranean dampness of the estate’s foundation, smelling faintly of old paper, ozone, and wet limestone.

As they descended into the pitch-black corridor of the sub-level archive, the faint hum of an industrial generator buzzed through the walls. A thin sliver of blue LED light poured out from beneath the heavy steel door of the primary server vault.

Julian raised his pistol, signaling Elena to stay flat against the damp stone wall. He reached out, gripped the heavy brass handle, and threw the door open with explosive force.

“Federal agents! Don't move!” Julian roared, sweeping his weapon into the room.

The vault was bathed in the cold, flickering blue light of a dozen mainframe monitors, but it wasn't an assassin or a corporate spy standing before the open rack. It was a young woman in a simple gray courier uniform, her back turned to them as she frantically typed a final string of commands into the master terminal.

“Turn around slowly with your hands where I can see them!” Julian commanded, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger.

The woman froze. She stopped typing, slowly raising her hands above her head, and turned around to face them.

Elena gasped, taking a sharp step forward out of the shadows. It wasn't a hired mercenary or a corporate operative. It was Maya, Victoria’s quiet, unassuming personal assistant—the very woman who had supposedly quit two weeks prior to care for an ailing mother in upstate New York.

“Maya?” Elena said, her voice laced with profound shock. “What are you doing here?”

Maya’s face was pale, her eyes wide with terror as she stared down the barrel of Julian’s gun. “I had to finish the protocol,” Maya whimpered, her voice trembling violently. “If I didn't wipe the final sector, Victoria’s brother would kill my family before the sun came up.”

Julian lowered his pistol just an inch, his brow furrowing deeply. “Victoria’s brother? Victoria doesn't have a brother. Her family line ended with her father’s passing.”

Maya shook her head frantically, tears spilling over her lower lashes. “That’s what she wanted the board to believe. But the man pulling the strings behind the shipping empire isn't Victoria... it’s her twin brother, Vincent.”
