Chapter 4

A heavy hush fell over the room as the massive doors swung wide open. The glaring light from the hotel lobby spilled across the polished floor, silhouetting a tall, elegant figure standing in the threshold. Dressed in a timeless emerald-green silk gown that commanded absolute authority, Clara Vance stepped into the ballroom. Her posture was immaculate, her expression serene yet unyielding. Behind her walked two uniformed federal marshals and a senior forensic auditor from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He had not seen his estranged wife in over six months—not since the board had forced her out under mysterious circumstances orchestrated by Eleanor and Celeste.

“Good evening, everyone,” Clara’s voice rang out, clear, resonant, and entirely composed. “I trust I haven’t missed the main event.”

Eleanor stumbled backward, clutching the edge of the nearest table as if she had just seen a ghost. “You... you were supposed to be out of the country. The flights were grounded.”

“My private pilot knows better than to abandon a federal subpoena, Eleanor,” Clara replied calmly, walking down the central aisle as the crowd parted for her like water.

Maya sprang up from her seat, abandoning all decorum, and ran straight into her mother’s open arms. Clara scooped the little girl up, kissing the top of her head before setting her gently back down. She never broke eye contact with Julian, whose face was a mask of shock, remorse, and profound disbelief.

“Clara,” Julian whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead projectors. “They told me you signed the voluntary separation papers. They said you took the buyout.”

“I never signed away my birthright, Julian, and I certainly never abandoned our daughter,” Clara said, stopping just a few feet away from him. She reached into her handbag and pulled out a thick leather-bound folio, slamming it down onto the table beside the discarded fake belly pillow. “And unlike some people in this room, I brought actual documentation.”

The forensic auditor stepped forward, opening a matching briefcase filled with glowing laptop screens and certified bank statements. He cleared his throat and addressed the stunned board members.

“Over the past eighteen months, exactly forty-two million dollars has been systematically siphoned from Vanguard Holdings’ research accounts into offshore shell companies,” the auditor announced clearly. “All authorized under the forged digital signature of Clara Vance, executed by Eleanor Sterling, and funneled through accounts tied directly to Celeste Monroe.”

Celeste let out a high-pitched wail, burying her face in her hands as the federal marshals stepped forward, their heavy boots echoing against the floor.

“This is an outrage!” Eleanor shouted, her voice cracking with hysteria as she pointed a trembling finger at Clara. “She staged this entire coup! She’s trying to steal the company back!”

Clara turned slowly, her gaze locking onto Eleanor with a terrifying intensity. “The only thing being stolen tonight, Eleanor, is your freedom.”
