Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Astoria Ballroom cast a warm, golden glow across the sea of black-tie guests who had gathered to celebrate the founding anniversary of Vanguard Holdings. At the head table, the atmosphere was thick with forced laughter and clinking crystal. Julian Vance, impeccably tailored in his custom midnight-black tuxedo and silk bow tie, sat rigidly with his arm wrapped securely around his companion. Seated directly on his lap was Celeste Monroe, a socialite known as much for her calculated charm as for her shimmering gold slip dress that clung to her meticulously sculpted frame. Cradled prominently against her midsection was a bulky, stuffed textile mass disguised beneath the silk fabric.
Celeste beamed a radiant, theatrical smile at the surrounding tables, patting the object with an air of delicate maternity.
“That lady's baby bump is just a sofa pillow,” a clear, innocent voice pierced the heavy silence of the room.
Julian’s breath hitched. His jaw dropped in utter disbelief, his eyes darting frantically across the stunned faces of the board members seated nearby.
“What did you just say?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking slightly as the color drained from his face.
Before the child could answer, the chair to their left scraped violently against the mahogany floor. Eleanor Sterling, radiant in a dark blue strapless gown, stood up abruptly. Her fists were clenched so tightly her knuckles turned ghostly white.
“She's a lying brat! Don't listen to a stupid kid!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice vibrating with pure fury as she glared daggers at the young girl.
Little Maya Vance, wearing a velvet dress the color of dried blood, did not flinch. She turned her wide, unblinking eyes toward the crowd, speaking with an urgent, chilling clarity.

“I saw her take it out of the closet, and my mom has the security video on her phone,” Maya declared, pointing a steady finger straight at Celeste's chest.
Silence swallowed the grand hall whole. Julian stared down at the golden silk resting against his lap, his fingers brushing the fabric. Slowly, he reached out and pressed his palm directly against the center of the supposed pregnancy. It yielded with the unmistakable, hollow fluffiness of synthetic down. Julian pulled his hand back as if he had been burned, his chest heaving as he realized every eye in the room was locked on his trembling fingers.
