Chapter 3

The giant screen hissed as a high-definition video file began to play automatically, bypassing the hotel’s central AV system. The crisp audio cut through the murmurs of the crowd, broadcasting a sharp, unmistakable voice into every corner of the lavish hall. It was Celeste, speaking in a harsh whisper captured by a hidden lavalier microphone days earlier.
“Once Julian signs over the voting shares, we ditch the pillow and announce a tragic miscarriage,” the audio played clearly, echoing off the crystal chandeliers. “Old man Vance will be too brokenhearted to audit the accounts.”
Julian staggered backward, colliding with the edge of the mahogany table. The gold silk dress Celeste wore seemed to shrink around her as the entire room turned their collective gaze upon her with expressions of utter disgust. The illusion of power, wealth, and impending fatherhood dissolved in seconds, leaving behind the cold reality of a meticulously planned corporate heist.
“Turn that off!” Celeste shrieked, lunging toward the nearest wall-mounted control panel, her elegant composure completely shattered.
Security guards stepped forward, blocking her path with stoic professionalism. Eleanor stepped in front of Celeste, her arms crossed defensively, though her face was completely devoid of color.
“This is a digital deepfake,” Eleanor declared, her voice lacking its previous conviction. “Corporate espionage at its finest. Julian, you cannot possibly believe—”
“Shut up, Eleanor,” Julian interrupted. His voice was terrifyingly calm, carrying a weight that forced the older woman to snap her mouth shut.
Julian looked down at the USB drive still clutched in his palm. The serial number printed on the casing matched the corporate procurement records of Vanguard Holdings’ subsidiary accounts—accounts managed exclusively by Eleanor Sterling and Celeste Monroe. The web of deceit was not just a personal betrayal; it was a multi-million-dollar financial conspiracy designed to strip him of his controlling stake in the family empire.
“You used my family’s legacy as a pawn,” Julian said, stepping slowly toward them, his eyes locked onto Celeste’s trembling form.
Celeste fell to her knees on the polished floor, the fake belly pillow slipping from beneath her dress and rolling pathetically across the rug like a discarded football. The collective gasp from the surrounding guests felt like a physical blow.

“Julian, please,” Celeste sobbed, abandoning all pretense as she reached out to grab the hem of his tuxedo trousers. “Eleanor made me do it. She said if I didn't play along, my family’s debts would never be paid.”
Julian stared down at her with hollow eyes, feeling nothing but a profound, chilling emptiness. Before he could utter a single word of judgment, the heavy oak doors at the main entrance of the ballroom slowly creaked open.
