Chapter 10

The silence in the federal holding room was heavy enough to crush bone. Julian stared at the wire transfer in Clara’s hand, his mind violently rejecting the information while the cold, hard facts stared him in the face. Arthur Vance—the man whose portrait hung above the grand fireplace in the executive boardroom, the grandfatherly figure who had taught him how to read balance sheets—was the mastermind behind the entire corporate conspiracy.
“Where did you find this?” Julian managed to ask, his voice hollow and broken.
“When the SEC froze Eleanor’s personal accounts, they cross-referenced her primary mortgage payments,” Clara explained, laying the document down on the metal table between them. “Every single month for the past five years, her secondary estate in the Hamptons was being paid off by a private family trust managed exclusively by Arthur.”
Eleanor leaned back in her chair on the other side of the glass, a smug, satisfied grin stretching across her face. She tapped her chained fingers against the steel tabletop.
“You thought you were running the company, Julian,” Eleanor mocked softly through the intercom. “You were just a placeholder. A clean, respectable face to put on annual reports while the real masters stripped the vault clean. And now that the house of cards has fallen, guess who the board is going to blame for the forty-two-million-dollar deficit?”
Julian felt the blood drain from his face. “Me. As CEO, I signed every quarterly report.”
“Bingo,” Eleanor smiled, her eyes cold as ice. “You’ll take the federal fraud charges, your reputation will be permanently incinerated, and Arthur will step in as the ‘heroic savior’ to restructure Vanguard Holdings out of bankruptcy. Classic family coup.”
Clara turned her piercing gaze toward Julian, her expression softening just a fraction, though her resolve remained unbreakable.
“We don't have much time, Julian,” Clara said quietly. “Arthur’s legal team has already filed an emergency petition with the board to invoke the corporate incapacitation clause, citing your ‘severe emotional distress’ following the gala scandal.”
Julian stood up abruptly, the metal chair scraping loudly against the concrete floor. The web of deceit was far larger, darker, and more deeply rooted than he could have ever imagined. His own family had weaponized his blind ambition against him, using a fake baby bump and a sofa pillow as a theatrical distraction while they picked his pockets clean.
“We’re going straight to his estate,” Julian declared, his voice hardening with a sudden, icy fury. “Before he can wipe the central servers.”

Clara nodded, turning toward the door. But before they could take a step, the holding room’s wall-mounted emergency speaker crackled to life, broadcasting an urgent security announcement from the Vanguard tower downtown.
“Attention all executive personnel: Federal agents have just executed a search warrant at the private residence of Arthur Vance,” the dispatcher’s voice announced over the intercom. “And they report that the primary offline server has already been wiped clean.”
