Under Oath
The central courtroom of the County Courthouse was packed to capacity. Reporters, corporate analysts, and curious onlookers crammed into the wooden pews to witness the final deposition of the Sterling estate dispute.
Arthur sat at the defense table beside Richard Vance. He looked small beneath the vaulted ceilings and grand mahogany paneling of the courtroom. Across the aisle sat Clara, composed and dignified, flanked by her legal team.
The judge slammed her gavel down, bringing the room to absolute order.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge began, looking over her half-moon spectacles at Arthur. "Before we proceed to the formal reading of the forensic audit, your attorney indicated you wished to make a statement under oath. Is that correct?"
Arthur stood up slowly. Vance reached out to hand him a prepared statement—a carefully crafted legal apology designed to minimize criminal liability.
Arthur looked at the paper, then crumpled it in his hand and tossed it onto the desk.
He walked to the center of the courtroom, turning to face the judge, the press, and finally, Clara.
"Your Honor," Arthur began, his voice trembling slightly before finding a low, resonant steadiness. "For five years, I lied to this court, to my shareholders, and to the public. I committed fraud. I altered my son’s last will, and I deliberately disinherited my granddaughter, Maisie."
Whispers erupted across the gallery. Reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks. Vance put his head in his hands, knowing Arthur had just surrendered his entire legal defense.
"I did it because I was terrified," Arthur continued, tears glistening in his old eyes. "I believed that control was the only thing keeping my life together. I thought if I admitted my son had succeeded without my money, it meant I was a failure as a father. I let pride turn me into a monster."

"Clara... I cannot undo the five years of pain I caused you and Maisie. I don't ask for your forgiveness today. I only ask that the court transfer full ownership of Vanguard Enterprises and the Sterling Trust to you and Maisie immediately. I surrender all claims."
