The Vanguard Legacy / Chapter 10 / 15

The Echoes of an Empty Hall

Following his public confession, Arthur surrendered his assets without further legal battle. The court mandated full restitution, placing the controlling shares of Vanguard Enterprises into a protective trust managed by Clara until Maisie reached adulthood.

The public scandal slowly faded from the front pages, but the consequences remained. Chloe, unable to handle the loss of status and facing public humiliation, relocated to Europe, cutting off contact with her parents entirely.

Arthur retired to his massive estate, now stripped of its grand staff and corporate glory. The halls that had once hosted extravagant galas were now hauntingly silent.

One cold Tuesday evening, Evelyn sat beside Arthur in the drawing room. The fireplace crackled softly, casting long shadows across the dark wood paneling.

"I talked to Clara today," Evelyn said gently, setting down her knitting needles.

Arthur didn't look up from his teacup. "I assume she wants me to sign the final property deeds?"

"No," Evelyn replied. "She wanted to know how your health was doing. She heard your blood pressure was acting up."

Arthur froze, looking at his wife in genuine shock. "She... asked about me?"

"Clara doesn't hate you, Arthur," Evelyn said softly. "She hated what you did, but she never carried malice in her heart. She’s building Thomas's foundation now. The first community center opens next month."

Arthur stared into the flames, a heavy lump forming in his throat. For decades, he had believed that showing weakness was fatal. He had treated the world as an enemy to be conquered. Yet the only person who showed him genuine concern in his darkest hour was the woman he had tried so ruthlessly to destroy.

"I want to see her, Evelyn," Arthur whispered, a tear slipping down his weathered cheek. "Not through lawyers. Not in a courtroom. I just... I want to see my granddaughter."
