The Vanguard Legacy / Chapter 4 / 15

The Fortress of Cards

By Monday morning, the news of the legal injunction against Vanguard Enterprises sent shockwaves through the city’s financial district. The local papers ran front-page headlines detailing the sudden freeze on the Sterling family’s assets, sparking widespread panic among board members and investors.

Inside the glass-walled executive suite of Vanguard’s downtown headquarters, Arthur paced like a caged animal. His high-priced defense attorney, Richard Vance, sat across from him, looking through a copy of the legal filings Clara had served at the dinner table.

"How bad is it?" Arthur demanded, pounding his fist on the mahogany desk. "Can’t we get a judge to throw this out? It’s an absurdity! A desperate cash grab by a bitter widow!"

Vance sighed, rubbing his temples. "Arthur, I’ve known you a long time, but you lied to me. You told me the original paternity tests were inconclusive. The DNA report in this filing is signed by the director of the State Forensic Laboratory. It’s a 99.9% positive match. Maisie is Thomas’s legitimate daughter."

"So what?" Arthur sneered. "I’m the CEO! I built this empire!"

"You built it on patents that belonged to Thomas’s private company," Vance pointed out sharply. "Patents that, according to his original, unedited will, were bequeathed directly to his wife and daughter. If this goes to trial, the court won't just award Clara her share—they will freeze Vanguard’s operations entirely to conduct a complete forensic audit. Your investors are already pulling out."

At that moment, the door opened, and Chloe hurried in, holding a tablet. Her face was pale.

"Dad, the board just called an emergency meeting for noon," Chloe said, her voice shaking. "Two of our biggest institutional shareholders have suspended their proxy votes. They’re demanding an independent investigation into the trust’s finances."

Arthur slumped into his leather chair, the reality finally piercing his thick wall of denial. For decades, he had ruled through intimidation and wealth, believing that power was absolute. But his entire empire was built on a foundation of lies—and Clara had just pulled out the key brick.

"Find her," Arthur muttered, his hands trembling as he stared at the skyline outside his window. "Call her lawyer. Offer her five million dollars. Ten million. Tell her to take the money, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and disappear."

Vance looked at Arthur with pity. "Arthur... you still don't understand the woman you're dealing with. She didn't serve those papers for money. She served them for justice."
