Crayon Hearts and Scuffed Shoes

While the corporate storm raged downtown, life at Saint Jude’s Elementary School went on as usual. Clara walked Maisie to the school gates, holding her hand tightly.

Maisie wore her faded blue winter coat and a pair of scuffed sneakers, but her smile was bright as she greeted her classmates. Children have a incredible capacity for resilience when they feel secure in the love of a parent, and Clara had spent years ensuring Maisie felt like the most cherished child in the world.

"Mommy, look!" Maisie said, pointing to a large construction paper tree hanging on the classroom door. "We’re making family trees today! Ms. Higgins said we can draw anyone who loves us on the branches."

Clara smiled, kneeling down to tuck a stray lock of hair behind Maisie’s ear. "That sounds wonderful, sweetheart. Who are you going to draw?"

"You, of course!" Maisie said proudly. "And Daddy in heaven. And my stuffed bear, Barnaby!"

Clara laughed softly, kissing her forehead. "That sounds like a beautiful family."

As Maisie ran inside to join her friends, Clara turned to see a familiar black luxury sedan pulled up near the curb across the street. The rear window rolled down, revealing Richard Vance, Arthur’s lead attorney.

Clara walked over to the car, her expression calm and unbothered.

"Mrs. Sterling," Vance said politely, stepping out of the vehicle. "May I have five minutes of your time?"

"If you're here to offer me a settlement, Mr. Vance, you're wasting your gas," Clara replied, crossing her arms against the winter chill.

"Mr. Sterling is prepared to offer you fifteen million dollars," Vance said directly. "It’s enough to ensure Maisie never has to work a day in her life. She can go to any Ivy League university she chooses. All Arthur asks is that you drop the fraud charges and agree to a private settlement out of court."

Clara looked across the street at the school building, where the muffled sounds of children laughing could be heard through the windows.

"Tell Arthur that fifteen million dollars can't buy back five years of stolen memories," Clara said, her voice dripping with absolute clarity. "It can't buy back the birthday cards he refused to send her, or the way he spoke to her at his table three nights ago. My daughter is not a business negotiation, Mr. Vance. We will see you in court."
