The Vanguard Legacy / Chapter 6 / 15

The Vultures Gather

The emergency board meeting at Vanguard Enterprises was nothing short of a bloodbath.

Arthur sat at the head of the polished conference table, but the deference he was accustomed to had vanished. The directors—men and women who had blindly backed his decisions for decades—looked at him with cold, calculating eyes.

"Arthur, the stock price fell twelve percent this morning," board member Marcus Vance declared, slamming a newspaper onto the glass surface. "The media is calling this a corporate fraud scandal of historic proportions. The public sees a billionaire stealing from his dead son's orphan!"

"It is a private family matter!" Arthur shouted, slamming his hand down. "I am handling it!"

"You aren't handling anything," Chloe interrupted, stepping forward. To Arthur’s surprise, his own daughter turned on him. "Dad, the board is preparing a vote of no confidence. If you don't step down as CEO by 5:00 PM, they are going to strip you of your executive powers publicly."

Arthur stared at Chloe in disbelief. "Chloe? After everything I've done for you? I gave you your vice-presidency!"

"And you're about to ruin it!" Chloe snapped back, her true colors showing. "If Vanguard collapses, my stock options are worthless! If stepping down saves the company’s reputation, then you need to do it!"

In that moment, Arthur looked around the room and saw the hollow reality of the life he had built. He was surrounded by people he had bought, trained, and cultivated to value money above loyalty. Now that his money was threatened, they turned on him like a pack of hungry wolves.

No one in that room cared about his health, his legacy, or his feelings. They only cared about the bottom line.

He thought briefly of his late son, Thomas, who had walked away from this exact boardroom years ago, calling it "a golden cage filled with snakes." Thomas had been right. And now, the snakes were biting back.

With a shaking hand, Arthur adjusted his silk tie, stood up, and looked at the board members who had once bowed to his every whim.

"You want my resignation?" Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with age and exhaustion. "You can have it. But mark my words—without me, this company will burn."
