Chapter 5: Unraveling the Web
Over the next two weeks, the peaceful sanctuary of Oakhaven provided Clara with the healing she desperately needed. Under Mrs. Gable’s care, Clara regained her strength, her cheeks blooming with healthy color. Yet, outside the estate, a war was brewing.
Julian spent long hours in his study, working alongside his legal counsel and private investigators. The ledger Clara had accidentally discovered months ago was more than a record of stolen funds; it was a blueprint of a vast network of political corruption orchestrated by Victoria’s family, the Sterling Syndicate.
One late evening, Julian called Clara into his office. Spread across the large mahogany desk were financial documents, photos, and legal briefs.
"Victoria’s father is attempting to freeze my family’s commercial assets," Julian explained, pointing to a set of documents. "They know we have the evidence. They are desperate."
"What does that mean for us?" Clara asked, resting a hand over her rounded belly.
"It means they will fight back using every dirty trick they know," Julian said, looking up at her with a resolute expression. "They are planning a public smear campaign, claiming you fabricated the documents to blackmail the Vance family."

Clara felt a cold knot form in her stomach. "My word against theirs... who will believe a former maid over a wealthy dynasty?"
Julian stood up, walked around the desk, and stopped right in front of her. "They won't be fighting you, Clara. They will be fighting me."
