Chapter 1: Shadows in the Fog

The thick, cold mist hung low over the ancient tombstones of St. Jude’s Cemetery, wrapping the dark cypress trees in an eerie silence. Clara remained on her knees in the damp mud, her fingers trembling as she clutched her swollen abdomen. Blood trickled faintly from the corner of her swollen lip, mixing with rain and hot tears. Before her, Victoria stood tall and imperious, her cream-colored coat pristine despite the wet earth, her eyes flashing with venomous anger.

"Did you think you could hide this from me?!" Victoria had snarled only moments before, her hand raised in a menacing threat.

Between them lay the freshly turned earth of a grave that held no body—only forgotten memories and buried secrets. Clara squeezed her eyes shut, expecting another blow, her body trembling with fear for the child she carried.

Then, out of the dense gray fog, a slow, deliberate footstep crunched against the wet gravel path.

"Get your hands off her," a voice cut through the damp air. It was deep, baritone, and laced with absolute authority.

Victoria gasped, her head snapping toward the sound. The rage on her face instantly dissolved into sheer disbelief. Clara slowly lifted her tear-streaked face. Walking through the mist was Julian Vance. His tailored black suit was crisp against the bleak backdrop, his white collar open, and his eyes burned with a dark, unyielding intensity.

Julian didn't look at Victoria. His gaze was fixed entirely on Clara, kneeling in the mud like a broken bird.
