Chapter 9: The Legal Ambush

In June, Julian Vale made one final, desperate attempt to reclaim leverage.

Backed by a predatory litigation attorney named Raymond Croft, Julian filed a $10 million civil complaint in Cook County Circuit Court against Claire Nolan and Harrington Capital Partners.

The complaint alleged:

1. **Breach of Contract:** Violation of an alleged implied oral non-disclosure agreement regarding executive workplace relationships.
2. **Defamation & Slander:** Disseminating the hospital room audio to corporate stakeholders to destroy Julian's commercial standing.
3. **Intentional Interference with Prospective Economic Advantage:** Causing the cancellation of the Sterling merger.

The legal offensive was designed to intimidate Claire into signing a comprehensive gag order and surrendering fifty percent of her algorithmic licensing revenues in exchange for dropping the lawsuit.

Maya Chen—Claire’s lead counsel—and Arthur Harrington met with Claire in the firm’s boardroom to review the summons.

""They want a private settlement in mediation, Claire,"" Maya Chen explained. ""Croft is calculating that you won't want Maya’s paternity dragged through public depositions.""

Claire stood up from the conference table, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Chicago River, and turned back to her legal team with absolute, icy resolve.

""Tell Raymond Croft we reject any mediation,"" Claire said clearly. ""We demand a public, videotaped evidentiary deposition on Monday morning. And we file an immediate counterclaim for statutory child support arrears, fraudulent misrepresentation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.""

Arthur Harrington smiled, tapping his fountain pen against his legal pad. ""Set the court reporter, Maya. Let's give Mr. Vale the public audience he's been begging for.""
