Chapter 8: The First Milestone

Spring arrived in Chicago with a brilliant bloom of tulips along Michigan Avenue.

Maya was now six months old—a strong, joyful infant with bright hazel eyes, a mop of dark brown curls, and an insatiable curiosity about the world around her.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in April, Claire sat on the soft grass of Oz Park in Lincoln Park, watching Maya explore a colorful cloth sensory book.

Arthur Harrington walked across the lawn wearing a comfortable tweed jacket and flat cap, holding two cups of artisanal black coffee from a neighborhood café.

He sat on a wooden park bench beside Claire’s picnic blanket, smiling down at the baby.

""How is our chief data officer holding up?"" Arthur asked with a warm chuckle.

""She slept six uninterrupted hours last night,"" Claire smiled, taking a sip of coffee. ""And she discovered how to blow raspberries this morning. Her strategic output is at an all-time high.""

As if responding to her name, Maya looked up from her book. She locked eyes with Arthur, grabbed the wooden edge of the stroller, and let out a rich, musical, uninhibited belly laugh that echoed across the lawn.

Arthur’s eyes crinkled with profound, unburdened joy. He reached out with one broad, callused finger, which Maya immediately grasped with both hands, pulling it toward her cheek.

""Look at her, Claire,"" Arthur said softly, his voice thick with emotion. ""She doesn't have a single shadow in her eyes. You gave her that. You gave her a life with no secrets in the closet.""

""We gave her that, Arthur,"" Claire replied, looking at the man who had become the steadfast grandfather Maya deserved.
