Chapter 10: The Deposition of Lies

On Monday morning at 9:00 AM, the conference room at the Cook County Court Annex was charged with suffocating tension.

Julian Vale sat at the defense table in a cheap, rented navy suit, his face thin, his fingers drumming nervously on the wood. His attorney, Raymond Croft, sat beside him with stacks of aggressive motions.

Claire Nolan sat opposite them wearing a tailored charcoal wool blazer, her hair pulled back into an elegant knot, holding herself with magnificent, serene composure.

The video camera was switched on.

""State your name for the record,"" the court reporter announced.

""Claire Evelyn Nolan,"" she answered firmly.

Raymond Croft leaned forward, trying to establish an aggressive, intimidating tone. ""Ms. Nolan, isn't it true that you deliberately placed a secret speakerphone call during a private medical conversation to sabotage Mr. Vale’s career?""

Claire looked directly into the camera lens.

""No, Mr. Croft,"" Claire replied with calm, devastating precision. ""The corporate ethics hotline had been notified of Mr. Vale’s embezzlement forty-eight hours prior. The board conference call was an open, scheduled supervisory review. Mr. Vale breached a secure medical suite without authorization, screamed at a patient twelve hours after abdominal surgery, and attempted to coerce the falsification of a state birth record.""

Maya Chen stood up, submitting twenty-four exhibits into the record:

* The certified hospital security timestamps.
* The telecommunications metadata proving Julian initiated the verbal threats.
* The forensic bank records showing Julian’s transfer of corporate funds to offshore gambling accounts.
* The notarized DNA paternity verification confirming a 99.99% match between Julian Vale and Maya Nolan.

Raymond Croft slowly lowered his legal pad, looking at his client with sudden, furious realization.

""Did you know about the Cook Islands accounts, Julian?"" Croft whispered under his breath.

Julian did not answer. He stared at the table, cold sweat dripping from his chin onto his cheap tie, completely defenseless before the unassailable fortress of documented truth.
