Chapter 6: The Anatomy of an Ambition

While Claire found peace in Lincoln Park, Julian Vale’s personal life was disintegrating into a public, catastrophic freefall.
At the Sterling family penthouse on Lake Shore Drive, Evelyn Sterling—an accomplished corporate attorney and daughter of one of Chicago’s oldest legal dynasties—threw a thick manila envelope containing the board meeting transcript onto the coffee table in front of Julian.
""Is this true?"" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping into an icy, lethal register.
Julian sat on the edge of the leather sofa, wearing a rumpled blazer, dark shadows under his bloodshot eyes. ""Evelyn... darling... it was a meaningless lapse in judgment from last year. Claire is an unstable former associate who orchestrated a setup to ruin our wedding—""
""Stop lying, Julian,"" Evelyn interrupted, stepping forward, her emerald engagement ring already sitting on the marble table between them. ""I listened to the audio recording Arthur Harrington sent to my father. You didn't ask if the baby was breathing. You screamed about your credit card and your reputation. You are a coward.""
""Evelyn, think of our joint ventures! The social standing—""
""My family's standing does not depend on a man who treats his own blood like a toxic liability,"" Evelyn said, looking at him with pure, unadulterated disgust. ""The engagement is canceled. My father’s firm has withdrawn its $40 million institutional allocation from your investment pool. Security will escort you down the service elevator.""
Julian walked out into the cold Chicago rain on Lake Shore Drive, holding an umbrella with a broken rib.
