Chapter 4: The Banishment of Pride

Back in Chicago, the reality of their betrayal crashed down upon Mark and Jenna with brutal, unsparing force.

The fantasy of their secret romance—sustained for four years on stolen hotel weekends, whispered phone calls, and the illicit thrill of deception—disintegrated the moment it was dragged into the blinding light of accountability.

They had rented a small, sterile one-bedroom corporate apartment in the West Loop.

Mark sat at the laminate kitchen counter, surrounded by legal notices from Arthur Campbell’s law firm. His corporate partners at the logistics brokerage, having learned of the family scandal and the pending civil freeze on his business assets, had placed him on indefinite administrative leave.

Jenna walked into the kitchen, wearing sweatpants and an old t-shirt, her eyes dark and hollow.

""My friends aren't answering my calls, Mark,"" Jenna said, her voice shaking with defensive anger. ""Sarah blocked me on everything. Aunt Martha sent my birthday check back with a letter telling me I broke our family's honor.""

Mark slammed his coffee mug onto the counter, splashing dark liquid across the legal papers.

""Do you think my life is any better?!"" Mark snapped, jumping up from the stool. ""I lost my equity stake! Your mother filed an affidavit with the licensing board regarding the commercial real estate loans I co-signed with your name! I have forty thousand dollars in credit card debt and no income!""

Jenna stared at him, her lips trembling as the veil of infatuation was ripped away.

She looked at the man she had destroyed her family for: a petulant, cowardly creature who blamed everyone around him for the consequences of his own choices.

""You told me you loved me,"" Jenna whispered, tears of bitter realization running down her cheeks. ""You told me we were soulmates.""

""I was an idiot,"" Mark spat, grabbing his jacket from the back of the chair. ""And you were the biggest mistake of my life.""

May you like

He slammed the door behind him, leaving Jenna standing alone in the cold, echoing room.
