Chapter 2: The Void in the Morning

The silence that settled over the Miller home at sunrise was colder than the November frost coating the suburban lawn.

In the kitchen, Robert poured black coffee into a heavy ceramic mug with trembling hands. On the kitchen island lay the remnants of the night before: the printed transcripts, the legal pad where Karen had documented three months of forensic accounting, and Mark’s house key resting beside an unwashed wine glass.

Upstairs, in the bedroom she had occupied since returning from college, Lauren sat on the edge of the mattress. She was still wearing the grey sweater from the night before. Her eyes were swollen, staring blankly at the silver-framed wedding portrait on the nightstand—a photograph of a smiling young couple on a sunlit beach in Hilton Head.

The door creaked open softly. Karen stepped in, carrying a tray with a bowl of warm oatmeal and a mug of peppermint tea.

""You need to eat something, sweetie,"" Karen said gently, setting the tray on the dresser.

Lauren did not turn her head. ""How did you know, Mom? How did you find out?""

Karen sat on the edge of the bed, wrapping a warm, steady arm around her daughter’s trembling shoulders.

""A mother notices when the air changes in her house, Lauren,"" Karen whispered, her voice tight with suppressed grief. ""Six months ago, when Jenna moved back from Denver, she stopped looking you in the eye. Mark started working late on accounts that didn't exist. And three weeks ago, when I asked Mark for the tax documents to help file the small business relief form, I saw the joint apartment lease in Chicago registered under his business card.""

Lauren buried her face in her mother’s neck, her body racking with silent, shuddering sobs.

""Four years, Mom..."" Lauren choked out. ""Every family holiday. Every Thanksgiving dinner. She sat right next to me while holding his hand under the table.""

""They stole from you, Lauren,"" Karen said, her voice hard and clear as granite. ""They stole your trust, but they will not steal your future. Your father and I are calling Arthur Campbell this morning. We are filing the divorce petitions and the property injunctions. You will not carry their shame.""
