Chapter 14: The Ring in the Orchard

Three years passed.
The Whispering Ridge Trust had become a nationally celebrated model for ecological restoration and community agrarian healing, training over fifty young botanists and conservationists every year.
Nathan Cole had become an indispensable part of the homestead’s life, designing sustainable timber greenhouses and solar-assisted drying kilns across the property.
On a brilliant Saturday morning in early May, when the apple trees were covered in a breathtaking canopy of white and pink blossoms, Nathan led Lauren to the highest limestone bluff overlooking the Mississippi River valley.
The morning breeze was warm, carrying the scent of blooming clover and damp river stone.
Nathan reached into his canvas jacket, pulling out a small, hand-carved box made of native black walnut.
He placed it in Lauren’s hands.
Lauren opened the lid.
Inside lay a simple, elegant ring hand-forged from native Illinois river copper, inlaid with a delicate ribbon of white river pearl found in the shallows of the Apple River.
""I know what you've walked through, Lauren,"" Nathan said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with unconditional devotion. ""I know how hard you had to fight to reclaim your ground.""
He took her hand in his, his calloused fingers warm and strong against hers.
""I don't have empires or grand promises to make. But I give you my hands, my work, and my sacred oath to shelter your life, stand beside your family, and love you through every season for as long as I draw breath.""
Lauren looked down at the ring, then looked up into the honest, loving face of the man who had helped her cultivate the earth.
Her heart was completely, unshakeably full.
May you like
""Yes, Nathan,"" Lauren whispered, tears of radiant joy shining on her cheeks. ""With all my heart, yes.""
