Chapter 5: The Words Left Behind

At nine o’clock the following morning, the living room was filled with a brittle, tense quiet.

Amanda sat on the sofa, her arms tightly crossed over her chest, laptop open on her knees. Arthur sat beside her, looking fragile and aged. David sat at the kitchen table beside Helena, who held a small pocketknife.

With careful precision, Helena sliced through the twine and brown packing paper of the parcel.

Inside lay a battered, black leather-bound notebook with Charles’s initials stamped in gold: *C.E.V.*

Helena opened the cover. Charles’s handwriting—once bold and architectural, but growing shaky in the later entries—filled the lined pages.

She turned to a page dated three weeks before her car accident. She began reading aloud, her voice clear and resonant:

> *""November 14th.*
> *The fog rolled in thick today. I forgot David’s name for ten minutes this morning. I called him Arthur. I saw the look of terror in the boy's eyes, and it broke what is left of my heart.*
> *Helena does not sleep. She sits by my bedside, holding my hand when the tremors come, pretending she is not exhausted. She carries this entire family on her shoulders while Amanda and David look away, afraid that my decay is contagious.*
> *If you are reading this, Helena, know that my greatest fear was never losing my mind. My greatest fear was that my sickness would consume your life. If I go first, do not let them bury you in my shadow. Take the house. Take the garden. Live where the sun hits the floor.""*

Helena closed the notebook with a quiet snap.

In the living room, Amanda’s hands hovered over her keyboard, completely frozen. A single, silent tear slipped down her cheek, landing on the silver trackpad of her laptop.
