Chapter 13: Arthur's Penance

In late November, Arthur made his own quiet restitution.
He sold his personal vehicle and his collection of vintage firearms, transferring every cent back into the family foundation to establish an endowment for local Alzheimer's caregivers—providing respite care, temporary nursing relief, and mental health counseling for families drowning under the weight of degenerative illness.
On Thanksgiving morning, Arthur arrived at the Vance estate carrying a fresh pumpkin pie baked by his daughter Clara.
He stood on the front porch, hesitating before the bell.
The door swung open before he could knock. Helena stood in the foyer, wearing an apron over her favorite green wool dress, the aroma of roasting turkey and rosemary filling the air behind her.
""Are you going to stand on the porch in the cold all day, Arthur?"" Helena asked with a knowing smile.
Arthur looked down at the pie in his hands, his eyes misting over. ""I didn't know if there was still a place for me at this table, Helena.""
Helena stepped aside, opening the door wide to the sunlit warmth of the living room where David and Amanda were setting the newly built cedar table.

""There is always a place at the table for someone who chooses the truth,"" Helena said softly. ""Come inside.""
