Chapter 15: The Open Door

By August of the following year, the garden behind the Vance estate had exploded into full, magnificent bloom.
Climbing red roses wrapped tightly around the restored cedar trellis, filling the summer air with a rich, sweet perfume. Honeybees drifted among the lavender beds, and the stone path Charles had laid was clean, level, and bordered with white impatiens.
On a bright Tuesday afternoon, Helena sat on the wooden bench beneath the shade of the old sycamore tree, reading a book of poetry.
The front gate clicked open.
David and Amanda walked down the stone path, carrying bags of fresh peaches and groceries from the afternoon farmers market. Clara was behind them, holding her young nephew’s hand as he ran toward the garden with a toy wooden airplane David had carved in the workshop.
""Grandma Helena!"" the little boy shouted, running across the soft green grass.
Helena set her book down, her face lighting up with an unburdened, radiant smile. She opened her arms wide as the child leaped onto the bench beside her.
""Look at my plane!"" he beamed, holding the cedar toy into the warm breeze. ""Uncle David said it can fly all the way to the ocean!""
""It certainly can,"" Helena laughed softly, wrapping her arm around the boy's shoulders.
David and Amanda joined her on the bench, sitting in the golden afternoon sunlight that filtered through the sycamore leaves.
Helena looked back at the house. The windows were open wide, the lace curtains dancing gently in the summer breeze, allowing the light and the laughter to pour into every corner of the rooms.

She took a deep, unrestrained breath of the warm air. The door was open, the table was set, and the family was finally, truly home.
