Two weeks later, Helena sat in Courtroom 4B of the Monmouth County Superior Court.
Judge Katherine Reynolds adjusted her spectacles, reviewing the extensive medical records from St. Jude’s, the affidavits from the Trenton municipal library, and the sworn statements submitted by David and Amanda Vance.
""In the matter of the Estate of Helena Vance,"" Judge Reynolds spoke, her voice carrying across the quiet room. ""The court finds conclusive, uncontroverted evidence that Helena Vance is living, competent, and the rightful co-owner of the properties and trusts previously subjected to probate administration.""
The judge looked up from the bench, looking directly at Helena with profound professional respect.
""Mrs. Vance, the decree of presumed death is hereby vacated and expunged from the state registry. Welcome back to the land of the living.""
The gavel came down with a firm, resounding strike.
Outside on the courthouse steps, the autumn sun was brilliant and warm. The maple trees along the avenue were blazing in shades of gold and crimson.
Amanda linked her arm through Helena’s left side; David walked on her right. Arthur followed closely behind, carrying the legal folders with head held high.
