Chapter 5

The interior of the women's barracks was plunged in deep shadow, illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight slicing through the high windows. Derek Miller and his accomplice crept down the narrow aisle between the rows of metal lockers, their movements jerky and paranoid. Miller carried a small, sealed wooden crate retrieved from the duffel bag, his breath coming in shallow, nervous gasps. He stopped in front of Maeve’s locker, fumbling with a set of master keys he had illicitly borrowed from the supply depot. The lock clicked open with a sharp sound that felt deafening in the sleeping quarters.

Miller smiled triumphantly in the dark, sliding the crate onto the bottom shelf alongside Maeve’s spare boots. "Gotcha," he whispered under his breath, turning to signal his partner to grab the duffel bag and clear out. But as Miller turned around, his heart slammed violently against his ribs. Maeve was standing directly in the center of the aisle, blocking the only exit. She wasn't holding a weapon, but her posture radiated a lethal, contained stillness. The moonlight caught the sharp planes of her face and the vibrant red of her hair, making her look like an apparition of vengeance.

"Looking for something, Corporal?" Maeve’s voice was barely above a whisper, yet it carried an authoritative weight that froze the two men in their tracks. Miller’s accomplice panicked, dropping the canvas duffel bag with a dull thud that echoed through the room. "Move out of the way, O'Connor," Miller stammered, trying to puff out his chest while his knees visibly shook. "You don't know what you're dealing with." Maeve took a slow step forward, closing the distance between them with predatory calm. "I know exactly what I'm dealing with: two cowards trying to plant stolen base equipment to cover up a bruised ego."

Before Miller could lunge or attempt to push past her, Maeve executed a textbook-controlled takedown. She stepped inside his guard, grabbed his uniform collar, and used his own forward momentum to slam him flat against the metal lockers with a resonant crash that finally woke the surrounding soldiers. Lights flickered on down the hall as heavy boots scrambled toward the disturbance. The accomplice tried to bolt toward the side door, but Maeve swept his ankles out from under him with effortless precision, sending him sprawling across the floor. As the overhead lights buzzed to life, revealing half-dressed soldiers staring in utter disbelief, Maeve stood over the two trembling men, her hands resting calmly on her tactical belt. The trap had sprung, and there was no way out.
