Chapter 12

The infiltration went according to plan until the final, critical moment. Maeve slipped through the cut in the chain-link fence like a shadow, hugging the corrugated metal wall of the pumping station while the two guards remained distracted on the opposite side of the compound, laughing loudly at some crude joke. She reached the main electrical control box on the exterior wall, pulling a specialized multi-tool from her tactical belt to sever the primary power cable to the jamming equipment. Inside, the low-frequency hum of the electronic transmitters instantly died away, replaced by the natural silence of the desert valley.
The sudden drop in ambient sound immediately alerted one of the guards. He stopped laughing, turned his head sharply toward the main building, and shouted a warning to his partner in a language Maeve didn't recognize. The guard raised his rifle, sweeping the area with his weapon as he began moving directly toward Maeve’s position behind a stack of rusted oil drums. From the ridge above, Jenkins hesitated for a split second through his rifle scope, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Steady," Maeve whispered into her comms headset, her voice calm and absolute. "Hold your fire until he commits."

The guard rounded the corner of the building, his eyes wide as he spotted Maeve standing in the open space near the control box. He swung his rifle upward, but before he could squeeze the trigger, Maeve moved with explosive speed. She stepped inside his line of fire, deflected the barrel upward with her left forearm, and delivered a devastating palm strike directly to his chin. The guard’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed instantly onto the gravel, unconscious before he even hit the ground. The second guard whipped around, raising his weapon toward Maeve, but a sharp crack echoed from the ridge above as Davis fired a precision warning shot that kicked up dust inches from the man's boots.
"Drop the weapon!" Ramirez yelled over the comms, stepping out from the ridge line with his rifle leveled squarely at the second guard's chest. The guard froze, looked around at his unconscious partner, and slowly let his assault rifle slip from his hands, raising them high in the air. "Don't shoot! I surrender!" he shouted in heavily accented English. Maeve walked over, kicking the dropped rifle away from the man's reach, and zip-tied his hands behind his back with practiced efficiency. She keyed her comms headset. "Perimeter secure. All units report in." One by one, the four young recruits responded, their voices steady, filled with a newfound, hard-earned confidence that transformed them from scared kids into true soldiers.
