Chapter 2

The insult hung in the humid desert air like static electricity before a lightning strike. Marcus Vance sneered, his chest puffed out as he waited for the expected flinch, the defensive stutter, or the tearful retreat that usually followed his public humiliations. But Maeve O'Connor gave him none of those things. Her face remained a mask of controlled, devastating calm. Her red hair caught the glaring sunlight, framing features carved from absolute resolve. She did not scream, nor did she curse. Instead, her eyes narrowed just a fraction, tracking the micro-twitches in Marcus's jawline. She knew this game; it was played by insecure men who used rank and volume to mask their fundamental inadequacy in the field.

Slowly, deliberately, Maeve pushed herself up from the wooden bench. Every movement was calculated, conveying a quiet, terrifying grace that made the nearby onlookers instinctively step back. Marcus blinked, a flicker of genuine confusion disrupting his smug expression as he realized she was not shrinking away. He threw a crude, heavy-handed right hook, aiming to put her back in the dirt before she could regain her footing. It was a sloppy punch born of blind anger rather than tactical training. Maeve simply leaned her upper body back by a fraction of an inch, letting the fist cut empty air past her cheek.

Before Marcus could recover his balance or retract his arm, Maeve moved with blinding speed. She pivoted on her left heel, bringing her right leg around in a low, vicious sweep that targeted the back of his supporting knee. The impact was crisp and merciless. The kinetic force traveled up his frame, lifting his boots entirely off the concrete. For a split second, Marcus seemed to hang suspended in the humid air, his mouth open in a silent gasp of shock. Then gravity reclaimed him with brutal efficiency. He crashed down hard onto the unforgiving pavement, the breath exploding from his lungs in a sharp, rattling wheeze. He lay completely motionless on his back, staring blankly up at the cloudless sky. Maeve stood directly over him, towering in a stance so powerful and immovable that the surrounding soldiers stood paralyzed, their mouths slightly agape. No one cheered. No one moved. The silence of Camp Alpha was absolute, broken only by the steady, rhythmic sound of Maeve inhaling and exhaling through her nose as she adjusted the tactical belt resting low on her hips.
