Chapter 14

When Maeve and Scout Platoon Echo marched back into Forward Operating Base Delta with their prisoner and the seized data drive in hand, the atmosphere at the outpost was electric. Lieutenant Vance was waiting near the communications tower, looking anxious as he watched the weary but determined squad approach. "Report, Sergeant!" Vance called out as Maeve stepped up to him. "We heard gunfire over the comms relay before the signal went dead. Did you secure the station?" Maeve handed the prisoner over to two base guards before turning her steady, piercing gaze toward the lieutenant.
"We secured the station, Lieutenant, and we recovered the complete data archive," Maeve said, her voice carrying clearly across the compound. "More importantly, we found evidence that this relay station was being used by a high-level procurement ring to funnel stolen military assets to external buyers—with authorization sign-offs originating from regional command." Lieutenant Vance’s face drained of color. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could formulate a response, the heavy thrum of approaching helicopter rotor blades shook the dust off the corrugated roofs. A heavy transport chopper bearing Central Command markings descended rapidly onto the landing pad, kicking up a massive cloud of dirt and gravel.

The cabin door slid open, and two armed military police officers stepped out, followed by a senior colonel with cold, calculating eyes and silver hair. It was Colonel Sterling, the regional commander who had originally signed off on Maeve's transfer to Camp Alpha—and, as the newly decrypted files revealed, the ultimate architect of the supply theft ring. Sterling strode across the tarmac, flanked by his armed escort, his expression a mask of manufactured authority. "What is the meaning of this unauthorized operation, Sergeant O'Connor?" Sterling demanded, his voice booming over the fading whine of the helicopter engines. "Lieutenant Vance reported your squad missing from assigned patrol routes."
Maeve did not flinch. She stood tall, her shoulders squared, her red hair tied back neatly beneath her patrol cap, embodying the absolute personification of unyielding military integrity. She reached into her tactical vest, pulled out the secure flash drive, and held it out toward the colonel. "We weren't missing, Colonel. We were investigating an electronic jamming source that your logistics division conveniently forgot to map," Maeve said, her voice cutting through the tense silence of the courtyard like a razor blade. "This drive contains the complete transaction logs of your theft ring, connecting your office directly to the lost shipments. The game is over, Colonel." Sterling stared at the flash drive in her hand, his face turning a dark, dangerous shade of crimson as the military police officers standing beside him slowly exchanged uneasy glances, realizing the trap had closed permanently.
