Chapter 8: The Confrontation

Victoria was waiting for him at his corporate office. She looked flawless, an armor of haute couture and perfect makeup concealing whatever hurt lay beneath.
""You humiliated me, Arthur,"" she said coldly as he entered.
""I am profoundly sorry, Victoria,"" Arthur said honestly. ""I never meant to hurt you. But I didn't know I had a daughter. I didn't know the woman I loved was dying.""
Victoria’s expression softened slightly, the anger giving way to a weary sadness. ""You never loved me the way you loved the ghost of her. We both knew it, but we ignored it for the sake of a perfect merger.""
She took off the massive engagement ring and placed it on his mahogany desk. ""Take care of your little girl, Arthur. And figure out who you really are. Because the ruthless CEO I agreed to marry isn't the man who ran out of that church."" It was a clean break, a graceful exit by a woman who realized she was collateral damage in a much older love story.
