Chapter 7: The Box of Memories

One evening, while Mia was asleep, Arthur sat in his study with the plastic bag Mia had brought. Inside was Elena's journal. He opened it, his hands trembling.
The pages were filled with letters Elena had written to Mia over the years, detailing her hopes, her fears, and her endless love. But interspersed between the lines was the truth of their poverty. Days where Elena skipped meals so Mia could eat. The struggle to afford basic medications.
Arthur wept silently. His billions sitting in offshore accounts while the love of his life slowly starved and died in a dilapidated apartment across town.
At the back of the journal, he found the other half of the torn photograph. It was a picture of Elena, young and radiant. He carefully taped the two halves together. The picture was whole again, but the people in it were forever fractured. He framed it and placed it on his desk, a constant reminder of the price of his ambition.
