Chapter 1: The Shattered Vows

The silence in the cathedral was deafening. Hundreds of elite guests, draped in silk and diamonds, stared in muted horror. At the altar, Arthur stood frozen. The diamond ring he was about to slip onto Victoria’s finger felt like a lead weight. Looking down, he saw the seven-year-old girl. Her dress was frayed, her face streaked with dirt and tears, and in her trembling hands was a torn, faded photograph.

Arthur’s breath hitched. He recognized the man in the photo—it was him, ten years ago, his eyes bright with a naive, reckless joy. Beside him was half of a woman’s face, the other half torn away. But he knew those eyes. Elena. The woman who had vanished from his life without a trace just as his startup was taking off.
""My mother is dying,"" the little girl sobbed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Arthur looked at Victoria, his beautiful, bewildered bride. He saw the shock, then the slow realization dawning in her eyes. ""Arthur?"" she whispered.
He didn't answer. He dropped the velvet ring box on the marble floor. Without a word to the congregation, without a backward glance at the life he was supposed to build, Arthur scooped the little girl into his arms and ran down the aisle, his tuxedo tails flying behind him.
