Chapter 11: The First Smile

The turning point came on a Tuesday. Arthur had cancelled a multi-million dollar merger meeting to stay home. He had found a recipe for Elena's famous homemade lasagna in her journal.
The kitchen looked like a war zone. Flour was everywhere, tomato sauce was splattered on the walls, and Arthur, wearing a $500 dress shirt, was covered in cheese.
Mia walked into the kitchen and stopped. She looked at the mess, then at Arthur, who was desperately trying to scrape burnt pasta off the bottom of a pan.
A tiny sound escaped her lips. A giggle.
Arthur froze, looking at her. Mia clapped her hands over her mouth, but the giggle bubbled up into a genuine, bright laugh. It was the most beautiful sound Arthur had ever heard. He grabbed a pinch of flour and playfully dabbed it on her nose. She gasped, grabbing a handful of cheese and throwing it at him. In that messy, chaotic kitchen, the ice finally broke. They weren't just a man and an orphan anymore. They were a family.
