Chapter 7: The Legal Reality

Back in the city, three days had passed without a word from Hannah.
Mark’s initial anger had curdled into genuine alarm. He finally called Hannah’s father, Robert, living in upstate New York, only to be met with shocked silence and immediate fury.
""What do you mean she left, Mark?"" Robert shouted through the phone. ""Where is my granddaughter?""
""I don't know!"" Mark snapped defensively. ""She had a hysterical episode over a minor disciplinary issue at Lily's birthday party and stormed out with the car!""
""A disciplinary issue? She’s two years old, Mark!"" Robert roared before slamming the phone down.
Within hours, Robert had hired a private investigator and filed a missing persons welfare check. By the end of the week, Mark found himself sitting across a polished oak table in a downtown law office, facing not just a frantic grandfather, but a formidable family law attorney named Sarah Lin.
Sarah slid a document across the desk toward Mark.
""Mr. Vance, this is a petition for temporary separation, sole physical custody, and an emergency financial restraining order,"" Sarah stated calmly, her eyes sharp behind wire-rimmed glasses. ""Your wife has retained my firm. She is safe, she is housed, and she is filing for divorce on the grounds of emotional cruelty and controlling abuse.""
Mark stared at the papers, his face turning pale. ""Divorce? She can't divorce me! She has no money! She’s dependent on me!""

""Not anymore, Mr. Vance,"" Sarah replied with quiet finality. ""And as of this morning, any attempt to contact her outside of court-mandated channels will be met with criminal harassment charges. Welcome to the beginning of the end of your impunity.""
