Chapter 11: The Courtroom of Truth

The final divorce and custody hearing took place in the county courthouse two months later.
Mark sat at the defense table with his high-priced corporate attorney, looking sullen and defeated. He had tried to argue that Hannah had abandoned the marriage maliciously, but Sarah Lin had presented an airtight dossier: medical records documenting Mark’s verbal abuse, financial audits showing his attempts to freeze her personal accounts, and glowing character affidavits from Clara and the Oakhaven community.
When Judge Thomas took the bench, his expression was grave as he reviewed the final decree.
""Mr. Vance,"" Judge Thomas spoke, looking sternly across the courtroom. ""Marriage is a partnership of mutual dignity, not an autocracy. The evidence presented demonstrates a profound and consistent pattern of emotional intimidation and controlling behavior on your part.""
Mark opened his mouth to protest, but his lawyer quickly placed a hand on his arm, silencing him.
""The court hereby grants a full dissolution of marriage,"" Judge Thomas continued, striking his gavel with a firm, resounding thack. ""Sole physical and legal custody of the minor child, Lily Vance, is awarded permanently to the mother, Hannah Vance. Supervised visitation rights for the father may be petitioned after six months of mandated anger management counseling.""
The gavel came down a second time.

Hannah sat at the plaintiff's table, closing her eyes as a profound, holy wave of relief washed over her soul. The legal battle was over. Her daughter was protected. Her freedom was absolute.
