Chapter 13: The Unbroken Promise

It was Lily’s fourth birthday.
There were no gold metallic balloons, no stressful dinner parties, no looming threat of sudden anger.
Instead, the backyard of the lakeside cottage was filled with laughter, bright paper streamers, a chocolate cake covered in colorful sprinkles, and half a dozen children from the Oakhaven daycare playing tag on the grass.
Clara sat in a lawn chair, watching Lily blow out four flickering candles with a triumphant, joyful shriek.
David stood beside Hannah near the garden fence, holding a small wrapped box tied with a silver ribbon.
""Open it,"" David smiled encouragingly.
Hannah raised an eyebrow, taking the box. She untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside rested a delicate silver pendant shaped like a budding oak leaf, accompanied by a small card in David’s neat architectural handwriting:
> *To the woman who showed me how strong a tree can be when its roots are planted in truth. Will you let me build a home with you, Hannah?*
Hannah looked up, her eyes swimming with happy tears. David was down on one knee on the green grass, holding out the silver chain.
""Yes, David,"" Hannah whispered, her voice breaking with pure joy. ""Yes.""

Across the lawn, little Lily cheered, clapping her hands enthusiastically—though she had no idea what was happening, she knew it made her mama smile, and that was enough.
