Chapter 6: The First Step of Reconstruction

The following morning, the sun broke over the lake, painting the water in brilliant strokes of gold and amber.
Hannah woke at dawn, brewed a pot of coffee, and walked down to the cafe. Working alongside Clara grounded her. She wiped down tables, organized the inventory ledger, and greeted the local townspeople as they drifted in for morning coffee and cinnamon rolls.
The town of Oakhaven operated at a different frequency than the frantic, status-driven suburb Hannah had left behind. Here, people looked each other in the eye. They held doors open. They asked how your day was and genuinely waited for the answer.
Around ten o’clock, the cafe door chimed, and a tall man with kind hazel eyes and a faded flannel shirt walked in. He carried a stack of architectural blueprints under one arm.
""Morning, Clara,"" the man said with a warm, easy smile. ""I smell fresh blueberry muffins, and if you haven't saved me one, I might have to reconsider our friendship.""
""Always blackmail with you, David,"" Clara laughed, sliding a warm muffin across the counter. ""David, this is Hannah. She’s helping me manage the place starting this week. Hannah, this is David Miller. He runs the town’s historic restoration workshop down the road.""
David turned his attention to Hannah, offering a polite, respectful nod. ""Nice to meet you, Hannah. Welcome to Oakhaven.""
""Thank you,"" Hannah replied, feeling a slight flush on her cheeks. It had been years since a man had looked at her with polite respect rather than casual dismissal or simmering irritation.

As David sat at a corner table to review his blueprints, Hannah realized that the world was vastly larger—and infinitely kinder—than the narrow, suffocating box she had lived in for so long.
