Chapter 8: The Digital Trap

"What’s happening?" Arthur demanded, standing up so abruptly his metal chair scraped harshly against the concrete floor.
Elena’s fingers moved across the keyboard in a frantic blur, her face pale under the monitor's glow. "It’s a counter-trace program. They didn't just track our signal—they anticipated our upload protocol. They've locked down the entire decentralized network node we were targeting."
Before Arthur could respond, the camp lantern on the workbench sputtered and died, plunging the entire room into near-total darkness save for the harsh red glare of the laptop screen. The sudden loss of light felt suffocating, amplifying every stray creak of the old building and the distant hum of the wind outside.
"Disconnect the satellite uplink, now!" Arthur shouted, reaching across the table to physically yank the cord from the port.
Too late. The red warning banner transformed into a flashing corporate logo—a stylized interlocking serpent forming the letter S, the unmistakable insignia of Sterling Bio-Tech. Below the logo, a text box appeared, typing itself out line by line in real-time: LOCATION CONFIRMED. SECTOR 4 INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT. CONTAINMENT UNITS DISPATCHED.
"They know where we are," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly calm as she closed the laptop lid with a sharp snap that cut off the red glow. The sudden return to darkness was absolute. "We have less than ten minutes before they surround the perimeter."
Arthur turned his head toward the corner where Lily was sleeping. In the dim moonlight filtering through a crack in the boarded-up window, he could see the small lump of the wool blanket. The girl had stirred slightly at the commotion, letting out a soft sigh, but remained asleep, exhausted beyond her years.
"We have to move her," Arthur said, his heart pounding against his ribs. "Is there another vehicle?"
"There’s an old delivery van parked in the loading bay behind the presses," Elena whispered, already moving toward the back of the room with silent, fluid grace. "The engine is old, but it runs on diesel. If we can get past the perimeter fence before they lock down the access roads, we might make it to the northern rail yard."
May you like
Arthur hurried over to the cot, gently scooping Lily into his arms. The girl blinked sleepily, her blue eyes reflecting the faint moonlight. "Are we moving again, Arthur?" she asked softly, her voice small and fragile in the cavernous space.
"Yes, sweetheart. Just closing our eyes for a little longer," he lied gently, pressing her close to his chest as he followed the sound of Elena’s footsteps toward the rear loading bay.
