Chapter 4: The First Strike

The tension in the room snapped like a stretched rubber band. Before the echo of Arthur's voice had even faded, a dark silhouette lunged through the shattered doorway. The intruder moved with calculated violence, aiming to overwhelm them with sheer speed before they could react.

Elena did not hesitate. With a feral snarl that ripped from the back of her throat, she swung the wooden baseball bat in a ferocious, sweeping arc. The heavy wood connected with the intruder’s shoulder with a sickening crunch of bone and torn fabric, the impact echoing loudly in the enclosed space. The man stumbled hard to the side, crashing into a small wooden side table and sending a ceramic lamp shattering across the linoleum floor.

"Get back!" Elena screamed, her voice cutting through the noise like a jagged blade as she immediately recovered her stance, positioning herself squarely between the fallen intruder and Arthur.

Arthur didn't waste a single second. Carrying Lily securely in his arms, he darted toward the tiny bathroom at the end of the narrow hallway. The door was already open, the small frosted glass window pushed out into the damp night air. Below them, the rusted metal steps of the fire escape descended into a dark, narrow alleyway cluttered with overflowing trash bins.

"Hold on tight, Lily," Arthur whispered urgently, setting the girl down on the edge of the windowsill while keeping one arm firmly around her waist. The cold rain had started to fall outside, slicking the metal rungs of the ladder with a dangerous sheen of water.

Behind them, the muffled sounds of a struggle filled the apartment. Elena was shouting commands, the heavy thud of the bat striking drywall and wood punctuating the air. Arthur knew she couldn't hold the hallway alone for long. More men were coming—he could hear the heavy boots pounding on the concrete stairs just outside the third-floor landing.

He hoisted Lily out the window, stepping carefully onto the first grated platform of the fire escape. The bitter wind whipped across his face, stinging his eyes, but he kept his focus entirely on the descent. Every instinct screamed at him to run, but he knew that survival wasn't just about escaping this building; it was about exposing the corruption that had forced them into the shadows in the first place.
