Chapter 6: The Safe House

The safe house was an abandoned printing press on the industrial outskirts of the city, hidden behind a towering perimeter fence topped with rusted barbed wire. The building had been abandoned for over a decade, its windows boarded up with rotting plywood, but the heavy steel side door still possessed a functional deadbolt that Arthur had reinforced months ago.
Inside, the vast open floor was filled with the ghostly shapes of massive printing presses covered in thick plastic tarps. The air smelled of old paper, damp concrete, and lingering machine oil. A single battery-powered camping lantern sat on a wooden workbench, casting a warm, pale circle of light that pushed back the surrounding gloom.
Elena locked the heavy steel door behind them, throwing the deadbolt home with a resounding metallic echo that signaled their temporary sanctuary. She leaned the baseball bat against the workbench, finally exhaling a long, trembling breath that seemed to drain the immediate tension from her shoulders, though her eyes remained sharp and watchful.
Arthur gently set Lily down on a camp cot tucked into the corner of the room, wrapping a thick wool blanket around her shivering shoulders. The young girl’s blonde pigtails were damp, and her blue eyes looked heavy with exhaustion. "You're safe here, Lily. Try to get some rest," Arthur said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
Lily nodded weakly, pulling the blanket up to her chin before curling onto her side. Within minutes, the sheer emotional exhaustion of the night claimed her, and her breathing fell into the steady, slow rhythm of sleep.
Arthur walked over to the workbench where Elena was examining a small, battered laptop connected to a portable satellite uplink. The blue light from the screen illuminated her tired face, casting deep shadows beneath her eyes.
"Did they follow our digital footprint?" Arthur asked, pulling up a metal folding chair and sitting down heavily.

"I routed our signal through three different proxy servers before we left the apartment," Elena replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced precision. "As far as they know, we vanished into thin air. But that won't last long. Sterling’s security network is sophisticated. They have algorithms scanning every transaction and communication channel in the tri-state area."
Arthur placed the encrypted flash drive on the metal table between them. The small plastic device looked entirely unremarkable, yet it was the key to dismantling a multi-billion-dollar corporate conspiracy that spanned across pharmaceuticals, government contracts, and illegal surveillance.
