Chapter 6

The service corridor narrows into a cramped concrete utility tunnel where overhead pipes drip condensation onto the rough floor. The rhythmic hissing of steam creates a near-constant white noise, masking the soft sound of Julian and Rosie’s footsteps. Rosie grips Julian’s hand tightly, her knuckles bruised and swollen, but her steps are steadier now as the effects of the sedative finally clear from her nervous system.
"We're close," Julian murmurs, shining the small penlight he retrieved from his tuxedo pocket against the rusted metal numbers painted on the wall. "Junction 4B. That connects directly to the storm drain access hatch."
Suddenly, the ambient hum of the facility cuts out completely, plunging the tunnel into absolute, pitch-black darkness. A fraction of a second later, heavy emergency backup generators roar to life further down the hall, bathing the corridor in a harsh, pulsing red light.
Simultaneously, the mechanical clatter of motorized security shutters echoes through the ductwork above them. Arthur’s automated lockdown protocol has expanded to the subterranean levels.
"They've sealed the main sector," Rosie whispers, panic tightening her chest. "They know which way we came."
"Keep moving," Julian urges, pulling her forward into a run despite the cramped quarters. "They're trying to funnel us into a dead end. We have to beat the shutters to Junction 4B."
They break into a desperate sprint, their breathing echoing off the damp concrete walls. Ahead of them, a heavy steel security shutter begins to descend from the ceiling, groaning as its motorized tracks grind against the stone frame. The gap is closing rapidly—three feet, two feet, one foot.
"Go!" Julian yells, pushing Rosie forward with all his strength.
Rosie dives headfirst under the descending metal barrier, sliding across the abrasive concrete floor. Julian follows immediately, throwing his body through the shrinking gap just as the heavy steel slams into the floor with a deafening crash, kicking up a cloud of choking dust.
They lie coughing in the dim red emergency light on the other side of the barrier, gasping for air. Julian pushes himself up first, shining his penlight around their new location. They are inside a small, circular junction chamber. In the center of the floor sits a heavy iron access hatch bearing a yellow biohazard symbol and a faded stencil reading City Storm Drain Access.
"We made it," Julian breathes, collapsing next to the hatch and wrestling with the rusted iron wheel lock.

Rosie crawls over to help him, using her weight to leverage the stubborn mechanism. With a loud, protesting screech, the rusted seal breaks, and the heavy iron lid swings upward, revealing a dark, echoing vertical ladder leading down into the city's subterranean drainage network. The smell of damp earth and rushing water rises from the darkness below, sweet and liberating.
