Chapter 10: Sanctuary of Stone

The heavy oak doors of the public library swing open, welcoming Julian and Rosie into a vast, cavernous hall smelling of polished wood, ancient paper, and floor wax. Shafts of pale morning sunlight stream through towering stained-glass windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet air. The reading room is practically empty at this hour, save for a few elderly patrons hunched over newspapers in the far corner.

Julian leads Rosie toward the rear alcove where a row of older, bulky desktop computers sits plugged into the unmonitored municipal network. He sits down at the terminal, sliding the waterproof leather pouch from his jacket onto the scarred wooden desktop.

"Is the terminal clean?" Rosie whispers, standing vigil behind his chair and watching the entrance of the alcove.

"Completely," Julian says, inserting the secure flash drive into the front USB port of the beige computer tower. The monitor flickers to life, illuminating his tired face with a harsh blue glow. "No corporate tracking, no firewall surveillance. Direct fiber link to the independent media collective."

He navigates rapidly through the encrypted folder directories, pulling up the master file containing the Lori Project archives, financial ledgers, and human subject assignment logs. The sheer volume of data scrolls down the screen in neat, damning columns—millions of dollars funneled through offshore accounts, forged psychiatric commitment signatures, and detailed medical notes documenting the systematic suppression of patients who discovered the truth.

"Ready?" Julian asks, his finger hovering over the physical enter key on the mechanical keyboard.

Rosie places a steady, calloused hand on his shoulder. Her eyes reflect the scrolling columns of text—the very evidence that proves she was never insane, never broken, just inconvenient to a monster.

"Do it," she says firmly.

Julian presses the key. A progress bar instantly appears on the screen, indicating the rapid upload of the encrypted archive to dozens of independent news servers, legal watchdog organizations, and federal oversight bodies simultaneously.

Upload Complete.

The two simple words flash green on the screen. The truth is finally out in the open, uncontainable and immutable.

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights in the library reading room flicker violently and shut off. The emergency backup systems kick in with a low, ominous hum, bathing the room in a dull amber glow. From the main entrance hall, the sharp, authoritative click of heavy footsteps echoes across the polished wooden floorboards.
