Chapter 4

The piercing wail of the fire alarm instantly shatters the clinical calm of the vault lobby. Red strobe lights flash rhythmically, painting the walls in washes of crimson and shadow. The security guards shout in sudden confusion, their training faltering for a crucial few seconds as they scramble to cover their ears and assess the source of the emergency.
Arthur stumbles backward, his aristocratic composure cracking as the flashing lights reflect in his wide, enraged eyes. "Seize them!" he yells over the deafening shriek of the klaxon, pointing a shaking finger at Julian and Rosie. "Do not let them reach the stairwell!"
Julian doesn't hesitate. Seizing the moment of absolute disorientation, he grabs Rosie by her bound arms, pulling her firmly behind him as he sprints down the corridor toward the emergency exit. The white cloth binding her wrists frays slightly under the sudden tension, but it holds. Rosie grits her teeth, pushing past the burning pain in her neck and spine, forcing her legs to move despite the lingering effects of the sedation.
One of the security guards shakes off the confusion and lunges forward, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. He reaches out a heavy hand to grab Julian’s shoulder. Reacting purely on instinct, Julian pivots, using his momentum and the heavy brass key still clenched in his fist to strike the guard across the forearm. The man yells in pain and stumbles backward into his colleague, creating a tangled pile of dark suits and flailing limbs.
"Keep moving!" Julian shouts, his voice barely audible over the screeching alarm.
They burst through the heavy metal doors of the emergency stairwell, letting the industrial spring-loaded mechanism slam shut behind them. Julian immediately reaches for the manual deadbolt on the inside of the stairwell door, throwing the heavy steel bar into place just as a heavy body crashes against the exterior. The metal door groans under the impact, but the reinforced locks hold firm.
The stairwell is dark, illuminated only by the dim, flickering amber glow of battery-backed emergency lights. The concrete steps spiral downward into the depths of the building, smelling of dust and stale air. Rosie collapses against the concrete wall, her breathing ragged and shallow, her face slick with cold sweat.
"I can't... I can't go much further," she gasps, sliding down the wall until she sits on the cold step, her hands still trapped behind her in the shredded white cloth.

Julian drops to his knees beside her, his tuxedo jacket torn at the shoulder. He takes her face gently in his hands, his dark eyes filled with fierce, unwavering devotion. "Look at me, Rosie. We are getting out of here. I promise you. Just hold on for a few more minutes."
