Chapter 5

The rhythmic pounding against the heavy steel door upstairs fades into a distant, muffled thud as Julian and Rosie descend deeper into the concrete stairwell. The amber emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows against the bare concrete walls, creating an atmosphere of claustrophobic isolation. Every breath Rosie takes is a struggle, the physical trauma of her confinement and the lingering neurotoxins fighting a losing battle against her sheer willpower.

Julian gently kneels behind her, using his pocketknife to carefully slice through the shredded white cloth binding her wrists. As the fabric parts, Rosie gasps, rubbing her raw, bruised skin with shaking fingers. Her hands are stiff and pale, but freedom of movement returns immediately.

"Thank you," she whispers, her voice cracking as she rotates her wrists to restore circulation. She winces, the movement pulling at the angry red wound on her neck. "Where do we go from here, Julian? The exit leads to the subterranean parking garage, but Father’s security team will have every vehicle monitored."

"We aren't taking a car," Julian replies firmly, helping her to her feet and supporting her weight as they resume their downward trek. "We’re heading for the old drainage maintenance tunnel. It connects to the city storm system three blocks away from the facility. It's the only blind spot in their entire surveillance grid."

Rosie nods, leaning heavily on his shoulder. As they walk, the cold realization of what they have escaped settles over them. The Lori Project was never just a medical facility; it was an illegal containment black site operating under the cover of a legitimate psychiatric institute. Arthur Vance had used his position as chief director to build an empire of human suppression, burying anyone who threatened to expose the financial corruption funding his experiments.

"He won't stop hunting us," Rosie says softly, her eyes reflecting the dim amber light as they reach the bottom landing of the stairwell. "The project is his life's work. If the data gets out, his entire world collapses."

"Then we make sure his world collapses," Julian says coldly, pushing open the heavy metal door that leads into the subterranean service corridor.

The air here is damp and smells of oil and stagnant water. Rows of heavy gray utility pipes line the concrete ceiling, hissing softly with pressurized steam. In the distance, the low hum of the facility’s main generator vibrates through the floorboards. Julian checks his watch; they have perhaps ten minutes before Arthur bypasses the stairwell locks and realizes they have chosen the lower service route.

"Stay close to the wall," Julian whispers, drawing Rosie into the shadows as they navigate the labyrinthine maintenance halls. Every intersection is a potential ambush point, and every shadow looks like a waiting security guard. Their survival depends entirely on stealth, endurance, and an absolute refusal to look back.
