Chapter 3

The tension in the corridor is palpable, thick enough to suffocate. Arthur folds his hands neatly in front of him, his posture remaining upright and formal despite the confrontation. He studies Julian not with anger, but with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a lab rat trying a new escape route.

"You speak of terms as if you hold any leverage," Arthur murmurs, stepping slightly to the side to catch a better view of Rosie. "You think you’ve uncovered a conspiracy, Julian. In truth, you have merely stumbled into the maintenance machinery of a much larger world. The Lori Project was never about confinement. It was about preservation."

Rosie’s head snaps up, her bruised neck straining against the pain. "Preservation? You erased my memories, Father! You pumped my veins full of neurotoxins every time I asked about the offshore accounts!"

"Because your mind cannot handle the architecture of our enterprise," Arthur replies smoothly, his voice devoid of remorse. "Some truths are structural liabilities. When your mother tried to expose the funding sources for our psychiatric division, she wasn't eliminated out of malice. She was simply incompatible with the system."

Julian feels a cold sweat break out along the back of his neck. The casual cruelty in Arthur’s words confirms their worst fears: there is no negotiation with a man who views human lives as ledger entries. Julian shifts his weight, keeping his body positioned between Arthur and Rosie, his hand sliding subtly toward the brass key in his pocket.

"Your corporate sponsors aren't going to save you when the federal marshals see the financial audit I downloaded this morning," Julian bluff-bluffs, keeping his tone remarkably even. "Every shell company, every falsified psychiatric commitment form—it's already queued for transmission."

Arthur chuckles, a dry, humorless sound. "Do you honestly believe the federal government cares about the psychiatric records of one unstable woman? They fund half our research, Julian. The moment you step outside these walls, you aren't whistleblowers. You are fugitives trespassing in a restricted research zone."

The reality of Arthur’s words sinks in, heavy and relentless. They cannot rely on the system to save them because the system built the cage. Julian glances down the corridor toward the emergency stairwell. The red exit sign glows dimly through the haze of the sterile lighting. They have to break free on their own terms, using whatever grit and ingenuity they have left.

"Rosie," Julian murmurs softly, keeping his eyes locked on Arthur and the guards. "Can you walk?"

"Yes," she breathes back, her voice laced with quiet resilience. "Just get me through that door."

Without warning, Julian lunges sideways, throwing a heavy decorative fire extinguisher off its wall bracket and shattering the manual fire alarm glass. A deafening klaxon shrieks through the corridor, flashing red strobe lights casting chaotic shadows across the pristine marble walls.
