Chapter 9 - The Sirens Outside

The emerald green glow of the terminal screen reflected in the polished glass of the conference room windows, casting an unearthly hue over the room. Far below on the rain-slicked street, the sharp, wailing howl of approaching federal police sirens began to cut through the midnight air.
Marcus froze with his hand hovering over the brass doorknob. He turned his head slowly, his eyes darting between the flashing terminal and the window where twin beams of red and blue light were painting the brick facade of the opposing building.
"You think the marshals are going to save you?" Marcus sneered, though his voice lacked its previous venom. "The moment federal agents walk through that door, this entire building goes into receivership. Sterling Logistics will be liquidated for pennies on the dollar. You won't have a company, a house, or a dime left to your name."
"We have each other," Leo said, stepping out from behind Julia with his shoulders squared. He looked every bit the master of the room, despite his light blue suit being slightly rumpled at the cuffs. "And my mother is walking out of that clinic tomorrow morning with a clear bill of health and a team of independent prosecutors who don't take bribes from Vance & Sterling."
Jonathan raised his head slowly from his hands. His eyes were red-rimmed, carrying the weight of a lifetime of compromises that had finally caught up with him. "Leo... your mother... does she know about me?"
"She knew you were weak, Mr. Vance," Leo replied without a trace of childhood warmth. "She told me that men like you always think they’re the smartest person in the room until the bill comes due. Yours just arrived."
Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed down the carpeted hallway outside the conference room door. The sound of tactical boots striking the floor left no doubt about who was arriving.
Julia reached down and gently placed her hand on Leo’s shoulder. "They're here."
The door swung open with a sharp click, and three federal marshals in tactical gear stepped into the room, their weapons holstered but their presence commanding absolute authority. The lead agent, a tall woman with silver hair tied back in a strict bun, scanned the room in a single, practiced sweep.
"Marcus Sterling," the lead agent said, stepping directly toward Marcus with a pair of steel cuffs already in her hand. "You are under arrest for corporate obstruction, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit financial fraud."
Marcus didn't resist as the cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He threw one final, lingering look at his twelve-year-old nephew, a strange, grim expression crossing his features. "You remind me of your grandfather, boy. That’s a tragedy you won't survive."
As Marcus was led out into the hallway, the agent turned her attention to Jonathan Vance. "Jonathan Vance, remain seated. You are being detained for questioning regarding the concealment of federal assets."
Jonathan didn't move. He simply nodded once, his gaze fixed on the polished wood of the conference table where his decades of ambition had ended in ruin.
Julia let out a long, ragged breath that sounded like years of exhaustion leaving her body all at once. She looked down at Leo, who stood tall amidst the chaos, his expression as calm and unreadable as stone.
"Well, Leo," Julia whispered softly, a tired smile touching her lips. "What do we do now?"
Leo reached into his pocket, pulled out the glowing smartphone, and turned off the restricted access icon with a single, decisive swipe. The screen went dark, reflecting the quiet resilience of a boy who had just saved his family from the wreckage of an empire.

"Now," Leo said, turning toward the private elevator doors as they chimed open to reveal an empty car waiting to take them down to the street. "We go home and make breakfast for Mom."
