Chapter 13 - The Electronic Lock

The silver briefcase sat heavily on the mahogany entryway table, its electronic keypad pulsing with a steady, amber-colored light that cast long reflections across the polished wood. Leo stood directly in front of it, his right thumb hovering an inch above the biometric scanner embedded in the center of the casing.
Elena stood a few feet behind him, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, while Julia watched from the doorway of the study with her tablet clutched tightly against her chest.
"Don't do it, Leo," Elena warned, her voice trembling slightly. "It could be a trap. A remote trigger or a data-wiping virus designed to compromise your proxy status."
"If it’s a virus, the local firewall will quarantine it before it reaches the core memory," Leo said, his voice entirely calm, displaying a maturity that felt unnerving in a child of his age. "The courier said it requires biometric verification. That means my DNA is the only key that can open it."
Julia stepped closer, her analytical mind overriding her maternal instincts. "He’s right, Elena. The federal court registered Leo’s biometric profile into the national probate registry this morning. If someone tries to force an unlock with unauthorized credentials, the briefcase will automatically self-destruct its internal storage disks."
Leo lowered his thumb slowly until the pad of his finger made direct contact with the glass scanner.
A sharp beep echoed through the silent foyer. The amber light on the keypad flickered, shifted through a rapid sequence of violet and blue, and finally settled on a brilliant, solid green.
“Biometric verification confirmed,” a synthetic voice echoed from the briefcase’s internal speaker. “Welcome, Trustee Sterling.”
The heavy metal latches popped open simultaneously with a satisfying mechanical snap, lifting the lid a fraction of an inch to reveal the contents resting inside.
Leo lifted the lid all the way back. Inside the custom foam cutout lay a single, old-fashioned paper notebook bound in cracked black leather, alongside a sleek, military-grade encrypted hardware token.
Elena walked up and peered into the case. Her breath caught in her throat. "That... that’s your grandfather’s personal journal."

Leo reached down and picked up the black leather notebook, carefully opening its yellowed pages. The
