Chapter 3 - The Marshal’s Envelope

The heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom echoed with a dull thud as the two federal marshals entered the space. The ambient chatter of the elite guests died down entirely, replaced by the soft hum of the air conditioning and the rhythmic clicking of heels on marble.
Arthur stood frozen, his dark suit suddenly looking like a straitjacket. He looked at Evelyn, who had already begun backing away toward the shadows of the indoor garden, her pink silk dress rustling against the ferns.
"Arthur," the taller marshal said, pulling a folded sheet of heavy bond paper from his breast pocket. "Arthur Sterling, you are hereby served with a temporary restraining order and an asset freeze pursuant to federal indictment 44-B."
Leo lowered his hand slightly, though the smartphone remained unlocked, its battery indicator glowing green at ninety-eight percent. He watched his father’s face crumble from corporate arrogance into desperate calculation.
"This is a mistake," Arthur rasped, his voice losing its thunderous authority. "This is a civil matter between shareholders. Vance is manipulating the board."
"It ceased being civil the moment you transferred five million dollars of employee pension funds into an account registered under Evelyn’s maiden name," Julia said, stepping closer to the marshals and handing them a duplicate copy of the digital ledger Leo had extracted. "Here are the hash values for the blockchain transactions. Every single block is verified."
The marshal glanced at the papers Julia provided, then nodded to his partner. They moved in tandem, stepping up to Arthur on either side.
"Mr. Sterling, please place your hands behind your back," the second marshal instructed calmly, his voice devoid of anger or triumph.
Evelyn let out a sharp cry from the edge of the garden and turned to run toward the private exit, but two security guards hired by Jonathan Vance blocked the glass doors before she could take three steps.
"Where do you think you're going, Ms. Davis?" Jonathan asked, his voice ringing across the silent room. "Your name is listed as a primary beneficiary on three offshore holding accounts. You'll be staying right here to speak with the financial crimes division."
Leo watched the scene unfold with a chilling detachment that frightened even Julia. She reached down, placing a warm hand on the boy’s light blue shoulder.
"You okay, Leo?" she murmured softly, her dark eyes filled with sudden maternal concern.
"I'm fine," Leo replied, his gaze fixed on his father being led past the glittering chandeliers.
As the handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists, the disgraced executive turned his head for a final fraction of a second. His eyes locked onto his son’s face with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You've ruined everything," Arthur whispered as he was pulled toward the exit.
Leo didn't blink. He raised the smartphone one last time, snapping a final timestamped photo of his father’s downfall before sliding the device into his pocket.
"No, Dad," Leo said to the empty space where his father had stood. "I just saved what was left."

The ballroom doors shut behind the marshals, leaving the elite guests in stunned silence, but the real storm hadn't even reached the horizon yet.
