Chapter 1 - The First Crack in the Glass

The chandelier above the grand ballroom shed a brittle, cold light over the polished marble floor. Crystal prisms refracted the illumination, casting sharp diamond patterns across the tailored shoulders of Arthur Sterling.
Arthur’s hand rested heavily on the bare back of a young blonde woman in a silk pink dress. Her name was Evelyn, and she wore a necklace of raw emeralds that belonged to Arthur’s legal wife.
Young Leo stood a few feet away, his light blue suit slightly rumpled from hours of waiting by the mahogany pillar. His bowtie pinched his neck, but he didn't care. He watched the rhythmic sway of his father and the interloper, his small chest rising and falling with quiet breaths.
"Dad," Leo said softly, his voice cutting through the soft murmur of the string quartet. "Why is she wearing mom's anniversary dress?"
Arthur stopped mid-stride. The music seemed to stutter. He looked down at his son, his dark beard twitching around his jaw as a flush of dark blood rose up his neck.
"Leo," Arthur hissed, his grip tightening defensively around Evelyn’s waist. "Stay out of this. You don't understand."
"I understand enough," Leo said, his eyes entirely devoid of the usual childish warmth.
Evelyn stepped back, her fingers nervously clutching the pink silk fabric of the stolen gown. "Arthur, tell him to go back to the dessert table. Everyone is watching."
"Let them watch," Leo replied, reaching into the inner pocket of his jacket. "They should know what kind of man runs Sterling Logistics."
Arthur took a threatening half-step forward, his voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing growl. "Put that away right now!"
Before Arthur could cross the polished floor to grab his son, a sharp click echoed from the nearby arched doorway. Julia, a woman in a sharp white jacket with intricate black lace sleeves, stepped smoothly into the golden light. She held a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents in her manicured hand.
"Do you think my lawyer already has the full file, Arthur?" Julia asked, her voice calm, dripping with cold certainty.
Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as the panic finally broke through her porcelain makeup. "Julia, what did you do?"
Leo raised the glowing screen of his smartphone, the restricted access icon pulsing with an amber warning light.
"Mom told me to protect our family," Leo said, his voice entirely steady. "And I just did."

The screen flickered, revealing the banking routing numbers that Arthur thought were safely buried in the Caymans.
