Chapter 9: The Immunity Deal

The interrogation room at the federal building in Manhattan was bare and stark. Assistant Director Miller sat across from Vincent Cane, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the laminate table.

"You handed us the entire Rossi network, twelve corrupt state senators, and three shipping cartels on a silver platter," Miller said, taking off his glasses. "The attorney general signed off on the non-prosecution agreement. Your legitimate assets remain intact through a blind trust. The illicit holdings are surrendered to the state."

"And the record?" Vincent asked.

"Vincent Cane is officially dead as far as the underworld is concerned. You walk away with a clean name, a private bank account, and zero criminal ties. But if you so much as run a red light in this state, the deal is void."

Vincent picked up the heavy Montblanc pen and signed his name at the bottom of every page without hesitating.

"One more condition," Vincent said, sliding the papers back.

Miller raised an eyebrow. "You're not in a position to demand extras, Cane."

"I want the factory building on 4th Street in the North End. The garment factory that laid off sixty single mothers last winter."

Miller frowned, looking through the property list. "It’s in foreclosure. What do you want with a defunct textile mill?"

Vincent stood up, fastening the button of his jacket. "I’m going to turn it into a community kitchen. And no one who walks through those doors will ever have to fast before orbit again."
