Chapter 13: The Echo of the Past

Redemption is rarely a straight line. One crisp November afternoon, a familiar black sedan pulled up to the curb outside the Star Light Center. Assistant Director Miller stepped out, carrying a manila folder under his arm.

Vincent met him on the sidewalk, stepping into the brisk breeze.

"Relax, Vincent," Miller said, seeing the cautious look in his eyes. "This isn't a raid. Just checking in."

"Everything is according to the agreement, Miller. The books are open to your auditors every Monday."

"I know. The accountants say you're running the cleanest nonprofit in the tri-state area," Miller said, leaning against his car. "I just came to tell you that Rossi took a plea deal yesterday. Forty years in maximum security. The Cane syndicate is completely dismantled. The street names have moved on. You're completely free."

Vincent looked up at the brick building, listening to the laughter of children playing in the upstairs daycare.

"I’ve been free since the day she walked into that club," Vincent said quietly.

Miller nodded, slipping his sunglasses on. "You're a rare case, Cane. Most men who climb that mountain never come down. They just fall off the edge."

"I had someone pull me down," Vincent replied.

Miller gave a single, respectful nod, got back into his sedan, and drove away, disappearing into the city traffic without looking back.
