Chapter 12: The Foundation

Six months after leaving the city, Vincent returned to the North End, not as a boss, but as a benefactor. The old garment factory on 4th Street had been completely transformed. The broken windows were replaced with wide glass panes, the soot-stained brick scrubbed clean, and a large wooden sign hung over the entrance: *The Star Light Center*.
Inside, the ground floor was a bustling community dining hall serving hot, nutritious meals three times a day to anyone who walked through the doors—no questions asked, no payment accepted. Upstairs, free daycare and vocational training classrooms were already filled with local parents.
Clara stood behind the service counter, handing a warm tray of roast chicken and vegetables to an elderly woman who used to live in her old tenement building.
"Clara?" the woman gasped, wiping her hands on her apron. "Is this... is this yours?"
"It belongs to all of us, Mrs. Gable," Clara smiled warmly. "Eat as much as you like. Take a box home for tonight, too."
Vincent stood near the back doorway, wearing an unassuming gray sweater, watching the room with a quiet sense of purpose. A young mother with a toddler tucked in a sling walked past him, her eyes bright with relief as she sat down at a clean table.

For the first time in his life, Vincent Cane understood what real power felt like. It wasn't the ability to take a life or control a city block. It was the ability to take away someone’s hunger.
